Kevin was raised in Stony Brook, Long Island; his mother worked in a chiropractor’s office, while his father owned an insurance agency. After matriculating from high school, he enrolled at the State University of New York at Cortland; he played for the school’s varsity American football team as a halfback. In 1989 James began doing stand-up comedy, appearing in various locations in New York. He quickly gained popularity, and this led him to appear in TV talk shows such as “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”, “Late Show with David Letterman”, and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. He gained his first television job two years later in “The New Candid Camera”, in which he used a lot of his improvisational skills.

He then moved to Los Angeles for more acting opportunities, leading him to become a guest star in the TV series “Everybody Loves Raymond”, which in 1997 led to his own sitcom entitled “The King of Queens”, which aired on CBS, which ran for the next nine years.  In the show, he plays a working-class parcel delivery man for the company IPS; other cast members include Leah Remini who plays his wife, and Jerry Stiller who plays his father – the three characters live together, and he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance in the show. In 2005, he made his film debut in the romantic comedy “Hitch” starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes. The following year, he co-starred with Ray Romano in “Grilled” before trying his hand at voice acting work for “Monster House”.

In 2007, he starred with Adam Sandler in “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry”, leading to more collaborations with the actor. The two appeared together in “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop”, the latter being successful at the box office despite negative reviews. He continued to do a bit of stand-up work, and in 2010 became the host of the “Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards”.
