The film was directed by French film and television director Yann Demange, and premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on 31 August 2018. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but grossed more than $29 million against its $26 million budget.

After being praised for his performance in “White Boy Rick”, Richie continued on to pursue acting full-time.
