Who is Ana Gabriel?

Ana Guadalupe Araujo Yong, known better by her professional name Ana Gabriel, was born in Guamuchil, Sinaloa, Mexico, on 10 December 1955 – her zodiac sign is Sagittarius, and she holds Mexican nationality. She’s a singer-songwriter and actress, who’s released 20 studio albums, and has succeeded in three music genres: mariachi, pop and Latin pop.

Early life and education

Ana was raised in Guamuchil alongside her sister Martha Laura, by their father Ramon Araujo and their mother Isabel Young; not a lot is known about Ana’s family, because she respects their privacy, but it’s known that her father died in 2006, and that her sister lost her battle against colon cancer in July 2007.

Ana was five years old when she became interested in singing, and her parents thus paid for her to be taught to sing and play instruments at a local school. She was only six years old when she performed on stage for the first time, singing Jose Alfredo Jimenez’ song “Regalo a Dios”. Ana studied at a local high school in Guamuchil, and was interested in a couple of activities during her time there, including dancing, acting with the school’s drama club, and practicing creative writing.

Ana moved to Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico upon matriculating in 1974, and enrolled at a college from which she matriculated with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1977; the same year saw the release of her debut single “Comprendeme”.

Career as a singer

Ana performed around Mexico in the following a couple of years, and released her debut album “Un Estilo” in 1985, followed by “Sagitario” in 1986. The year 1987 saw her travel to Lisbon, Portugal to compete at the Oti Festival; Ana sang the orchestral version of the song “Ay Amor”, and won third place.

Ana gained recognition in 1988, when her album “Tierra de Nadie” was released, and the following year saw the release of her album “Quien Como Tu”, which became a hit, and made Ana popular in Mexico.

Ana then didn’t release any new music until 2020, when her new and most recent album “Por Amor a Ustedes” came out.

Ana was nominated for a 1991 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance, for her album “Quien Como Tu”, as well as for four Latin Grammy Awards in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

Between 1989 and 2006, Ana was nominated for 29 Lo Nuestro Awards, winning 13; some of these wins were for the 1990 Pop Album of the Year, for “Tierra de Nadie”, a 1993 Best Pop Female Artist, and a 2006 Excellence Award.

Ana has four acting credits; she made her debut film appearance in the 1995 crime horror mystery “The Nature of the Beast”, written and directed by Victor Salva, and which starred Eric Roberts, Lance Henriksen and Brion James. It follows two people with deadly secrets, who have gone on a killing rampage in a desert.

Ana made her debut TV series appearance with her portrayal of Nurse in the 1998 episode “Caroline and the Secret Bullfighter: Part 2” of the romantic comedy “Caroline in the City”.

It was created by Fred Barron and Marco Pennette, starred Lea Thompson, Malcolm Gets and Amy Pietz, and follows the successful cartoonist Caroline Duffy, who’s living in Manhattan, New York City, and occasionally puts her friends in her comics; the series won six awards, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Graphic Design and Title Sequences, while it was nominated for five other awards.

The year 1999 saw Ana play Reporter in the popular drama movie “The Deep End of the Ocean”, directed by Ulu Grosbard, and which starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Treat Williams and Whoopi Goldberg. It follows a family whose son Ben has been kidnapped, while he’s only found nine years later; the movie won three of the five awards for which it was nominated.
