Charles became famous not only because of his sports career, but his ability to relate to people and create lasting memories. Early Life, Education

Charles came into this world on 20 February 1963, in Leeds, Alabama, and is of part-Native American and European descent as well as African American. Like most kids born and raised in Leeds, he attended Leeds High School where he played basketball, with his exceptional performances attracting the attention of scouts for Auburn University at one of the state semifinals during his senior year. At the time, Charles had two things going for him, his quality of play and his height which was 6ft 4ins (1.95m). He was recruited by Auburn on a scholarship, majoring in business management, and played basketball for three years, being named “The Round Mound of Rebound.” Charles’ agility and fiery passion for basketball also earned him Southern Conference Player of the Year in 1984; his early journey in basketball saw a promising future, and he indeed achieved landmark success in his professional basketball career!

NBA Career

Charles had the foresight to leave university education before his final year at Auburn, to start his professional career in basketball, joining the 1984 NBA draft where he was the fifth pick in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers, just two behind the selection of Michael Jordan by the Chicago Bulls.

Charles was trained by Moses Malone to manage his weight and adapt himself to the professional game. In his first season he averaged 8.6 rebounds and 14 points per game, and earned a berth on the All-Rookie Team. By his second year in the NBA, his game had improved to become the team’s leading re-bounder and the number two scorer, averaging 20 points and 12.8 rebound per game. He also leads his team into the play-offs where he averaged 25 points and 15.8 rebounds per game, but despite his hard work, Philadelphia was defeated 4-3 by Milwaukee, however, he was named to the All-NBA second team.
