Born Kiran Carrie Chetry on the 26th August 1974, in Patan, Bagmati, Nepal, she is the daughter of Nancy and Hom Chetry – her father is a part of the Hindu community in the Middle Hills of Nepal, while her mother is of Dutch, German and Ukrainian ancestry. She and her family moved to the USA, settling in Gaithersburg, Maryland where Kiran grew up, and was educated at Montgomery Blair High School, located in Silver Spring, Maryland. During her high school years, Kiran was a part of the student government, and also of the school’s swimming team. Following her matriculation, Kiran enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park’s College of Journalism, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism.

Career Beginnings

Kiran’s career started in 1995 when she became a part of News 21, headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. However, after a year she switched stations to join WICU-TV in Erie, Pennsylvania, assuming the job of a main anchor and health reporter. During her time there, she was rewarded the Best Enterprise Reporting award by the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association in 1997, for expose on teen smoking in the series “Young and Hooked”.
