He then enrolled at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, studying radio and television communication, however, he never graduated, so didn’t obtain a degree. Instead, he returned home, where he would set up Lakewood’s television program, helping his father launch a television career. From 1982 to 1999, when his father died from a heart attack, he produced televised sermons of his him.

Joel worked behind the stage, particularly as a producer, and though his father encouraged him to produce his own sermons, Joel declined, slating stage fright as the main reason.
