Jordan, the son of Beverley, a librarian and Walter Peterson, a schoolteacher, was the oldest of three children; he grew up in Fairview, Alberta, and it was during his early teen years that he discovered the writings of George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and many more authors of the 20th century. The librarian from his school was Sandy Notley, who happens to be the mother of Rachel Notley, the leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party, and 17th Premier of Alberta.

Education

HJordan went to Fairview High School, after which he entered Grande Prairie Regional College to study political science and English literature, however, he transferred to the University of Alberta, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in political science. Following his graduation, Jordan moved to Europe where he spent the next year, and during which he became interested in the psychological origins of the Cold War, particularly 20th-century European totalitarianism. He took and interest in the works of Carl Jung, Aleksandar Solzhenitsyn and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, among others. He then returned to Canada, and obtained a BA degree in psychology, then furthered his studies at McGill University, from which he obtained his PhD in clinical psychology. This wasn’t the end of his studies, as Jordan would then go on to finish post-doctoral studies under Maurice Dongier, and Robert O. Pihl, who was his supervisor for his PhD thesis.

Career Beginnings and Books

Jordan was an assistant and an associate professor at Harvard University from 1993 to 1998, and it was during this period that he studied aggression arising from drug and alcohol abuse, and supervised a number of unconventional thesis proposals. Jordan returned to Canada as a full-time professor at the University of Toronto, since when he has conducted research in the fields of abnormal, clinical, personality, religion, psychopharmacology and other fields. His first book, “Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief”, came out in 1999, having taken Jordan 13 years to finish it, and in which he described his theory of how people construct meaning, beliefs while using ideas from a variety of fields such as religion, mythology, philosophy and psychology. His second book made him popular all over the world – “12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos” became a bestseller in Canada, the US and the UK, and so Jordan ventured on a tour across the world, giving numerous interviews about the book, including the for Channel 4 News, which attracted attention, thanks to Jordan’s out of the box opinions.
