Ella was raised in California alongside her older brother Cole, by their entertainment lawyer father Douglas Craig ‘Doug’ Emhoff and film producer mother Kerstin Emhoff; the two divorced when Ella was nine in 2008, and it was in August 2014 that Doug exchanged vows with Kamala Harris.
Ella studied at Wildwood School and was passionate about sports while there as she was on the school’s basketball and swimming teams; she matriculated in 2018 and then enrolled at Parsons School of Design in New York City, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts in May 2021.

Doug was raised in Brooklyn, New York City alongside his brother and sister, by their Jewish parents Michael Emhoff and Barbara (nee Kanzer); the family lived in Matawan, New Jersey from 1969 through 1981, and Doug studied at Cedar Ridge High School.
