Early Life and Education

Finesse was born Ricky Hampton in Memphis, Tennessee, on 10 June 1992. He encountered the harsh realities of life from an early age, raised in a neighborhood fraught with adversity, he quickly learned to channel his experiences and emotions through music.

At only 15 years old, during his freshman year in high school, Finesse was arrested for aggravated robbery and tried as an adult despite his young age. He later spoke about the trauma and impact that this event had on his life. Despite this setback, Finesse earned his GED (General Equivalency Diploma) in 2011, but he hasn’t pursued further education.

Music Career

Finesse kickstarted his career in 2012, forming a group called Memphis Greatest Underrated, along with Moneybagg Yo and Blac Youngsta. They released their self-titled debut album four years later, gaining traction in the local hip hop scene.

In December the same year, Finesse released his solo mixtape “Goin’ Straight In” under the Mob Ties label, but didn’t manage to attract a wide audience. However, his next two mixtape “Hustle & Flow” (2017) and “Federal 4 Real” (2019) were both successful, launching Finesse into the limelight. Unfortunately, he had to put his music career on hold, after he was arrested.

He came back with a vengeance with his fourth release, “90 Days” (2022), this time under the Atlantic record label. It was his first album to reach the Billboard charts, peaking at #13 on the US Rap chart, and #57 on the US chart. The first single from the album, entitled “Back End” reached #86 on the Billboard chart after going viral on social media, and became certified Gold. “90 Days”also featured a collaboration with the Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane, “Gucci Flow”, in addition to features from Lil Baby and Moneybagg Yo.

Through his career, Finesse was featured in several songs by other artists, including DaBaby’s “Luv N Hip-Hop”, and Moneybagg Yo’s “Black Visa”.

In 2023, he released “90 Days Later”, the deluxe version of his 2022 hit mixtape, with featured new collaborations with rappers such as 2 Chainz, Kevin Gates, and Nardo Wick.

Finesse was also featured in the “XXL Freshman Class” list for 2023, which is published by the hip hop magazine “XXL” and highlights the up and coming rappers which are likely to make a mainstream breakthrough. In the past, the list featured names such as French Montana in 2012, XXXTentacion in 2017, and Megan Thee Stallion in 2019.

Feud with Moneybag Yo

Finesse notably collaborated with fellow Memphis rapper Moneybagg Yo, a partnership that amplified his visibility in the industry. Their collaborative efforts produced tracks that resonated with audiences, generating substantial buzz within the rap community. However, their professional and personal alliance eventually faced a rupture in 2017, which resulted in multiple ‘diss tracks’ and insulting social media posts.

The real reason behind their fallout remains a topic of speculation, with some fans believing that they had a dispute over money. Following his release from prison in 2022, Finesse made up with Moneybagg, taking responsibility for causing the drama with his former friend and colleague, and expressing his gratitude for the career opportunities he had thanks to Moneybagg.

Love Life and Relationships

Shortly after his release from prison, Finesse gained media’s attention for dating fellow rapper Erica Banks. They made their relationship public by posting a picture on Instagram with a romantic caption. The couple broke things off after a few months.

More recently, Finesse has revealed that he’s in a polyamorous relationship with two different women, rappers Nia Love and FNG Shugga. Apparently, a third woman was also in the picture at some point, before parting ways with Finesse. His love life garnered additional controversy in September 2023, when it was revealed that both Nia and Shugga were expecting a baby with Finesse. The trio have shared photos from their group maternity photoshoot on social media.

Converting to Islam

In November 2023, Finesse announced that he has plans to convert from Christianity to Islam after he released his upcoming studio album. He received backlash for this announcement from some fans, while others thought that his post was a joke. Finesse said that he wants to convert to ‘get his life together’ and improve his mental health through his newfound religion.

Legal Issues

Like many artists navigating the tumultuous terrain of the hip hop music industry, Finesse has encountered his share of issues with the law. In 2010, he was sentenced to eight years of prison in Tennessee for aggravated robbery; he was release in August 2016, after serving six years.

Less than a year later, he was apprehended in Birmingham, Alabama following a shooting incident at the Power Ultra Lounge nightclub. Although he wasn’t involved in the shooting, he was charged for firing at an individual in a vehicle on 25 June 2017 outside a club in Forrest City, Arkansas. He spent three and a half years in prison, between December 2018 and July 2022.

Subsequently, in July 2023, the Houston Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Hampton, accusing him of theft between $30,000 and $150,000 related to a reportedly unreturned Enterprise rental car he was apparently driving. However, these charges were dropped within two weeks.

In December the same year, his brother claimed that Finesse ordered an attack on him. He claims that the incident was caught on video, but it’s unclear whether he has plans to press charges.

Net Worth

As of January 2024, Finesse’s net worth has been estimated at more than $700,000. Through strategic collaborations, solo projects, and live performances, he’s expected to amass an even bigger fortune, solidifying his position an impactful figure in the hip-hop landscape.
