It was written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, based on the book “The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them” co-ordinated by Erin Gruwell, and starred Hilary Swank, Imelda Staunton and Patrick Dempsey. The movie follows a young teacher who has inspired her at-risk students to become good people and pursue higher education, and it won two of three awards for which it was nominated.
