April was born in The Bronx, New York City USA, on 31 January 1980 – her zodiac sign is Aquarius, and she holds American nationality. She’s an actress with close to 30 credits to her name, while she’s probably still known best for her portrayal of the supporting character Eva Benitez in the 2007 biographical crime movie “Freedom Writers”. It was written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, based on the book “The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them” co-ordinated by Erin Gruwell, and starred Hilary Swank, Imelda Staunton and Patrick Dempsey. The movie follows a young teacher who has inspired her at-risk students to become good people and pursue higher education, and it won two of three awards for which it was nominated.
Early life and education
April was raised in The Bronx by her Puerto Rican parents, about whom little is known because she respects their privacy; it’s said that her father was the owner of a small gas station, and that her mother was a cleaning lady. Because April hasn’t spoken of having any siblings, most of her fans believe her to be an only child.
April became interested in acting while still attending a local high school; she was a member of its drama club, and appeared in plays performed both at the school and a local theatre. She planned on pursuing acting in 1998 upon matriculating, however, April was urged by her parents to focus on her education, and she thus enrolled at Hunter College, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition in 2002.
Roles in movies
April made her debut film appearance in the 2003 short comedy drama “Big Wes”, while the following year saw her play Monica in the action drama “Rap War One”.
April starred as Mara in the 2008 short drama “Broken”, and the same year saw her play a supporting character in the crime drama “Blue Blood”, directed by Brett Ratner, and which starred David Anzuelo, Edwin J. Birmingham and Shon Blotzer. The movie follows the lives of several New York Police Department officers.
April portrayed Reina in the 2009 comedy “The Big Wes”, and the year 2012 saw her play Carmen in the hit musical science fiction comedy “The History of Future Folk”, written and directed by John Mitchell, and which starred Nils d’Aulaire, Jay Klaitz and Julie Ann Emery. It follows the lives of members of the alien bluegrass band Future Folk, and the movie won two of the four awards for which it was nominated.
April has appeared in only two other movies: the 2013 action crime drama “Officer Down” and the 2015 comedy drama “The Stockroom”.

April made her debut TV series appearance in the 2004 episode “Can I Get a Witness” of the mystery crime drama “Law & Order”, and was then cast to appear in an episode or two of a couple of series, including the mystery crime dramas “Jonny Zero” and “Blind Justice”.
April gained recognition in 2005, when she played Nurse Inez in the critically acclaimed romantic drama “ER”, created by Michael Chrichton, and which starred Anthony Edwards, George Clooney and Julianna Margulies. The series follows the people working at Chicago’s County General Hospital, aired from 1994 to 2009, and won 179 awards, including 23 Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 370 other awards.
A couple of April’s other notable performances in the remainder of the 2000s were in the drama “Six Degrees”, the comedy “30 Rock” and the comedy drama “Rescue Me”.
April played Officer Cira Manzon in the popular mystery crime drama “Dexter”, created by James Manos Jr., and which starred Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter. It follows Dexter Morgan who’s solving crimes during the day, and is committing them at night; the series aired from 2006 to 2013 and won 57 awards, including four Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 196 other awards.
The following years saw April make a guest appearance in an episode of various series, such as the action crime drama “Person of Interest”, the drama “Black Box”, and the mystery crime drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.
Most recently, in 2021 she portrayed Carmen Gruben in the episode “Blackberry Narcissus” of the romantic drama “Gossip Girl”, created by Joshua Safran and Stephanie Savage, and which stars Eli Brown, Jordan Alexander and Whitney Peak. The series follows teenagers attending a private school in New York City, and are using social media networks to spread gossip.
April could’ve been seen featured in the 2020 TV special “Skyline Performer Awards”.
April has made a guest appearance in a couple of talk-shows, including “The View” and “The Translators”.

Love life and husband
April prefers to keep the details of her love life to herself, but has still allowed her fans to have a glimpse into it. April married the driver and transportation captain Jose Castillo on 12 May 2007, in a private ceremony attended by many of their friends and family members; Jose has worked in the transportation department of a number of hit movies, including the 1997 romantic drama “Titanic”, the 2002 biographical romantic drama “Frida” and the 2006 action adventure drama “Apocalypto”.
On 30 September 2012, April gave birth to their daughter Summer Rose Castillo, and their second daughter Lyla Isabela Castillo followed on 23 March 2017.
Neither April nor Jose have spoken of any other people whom they have perhaps been with, and as of March 2022, April’s married to Jose Castillo, and they have two children together.
Hobbies and other interests
April is quite active on Instagram, and apparently enjoys the attention which she’s receiving from her close to 15,000 followers on the network; she’s uploaded more than 2,000 pictures, the majority of which have been taken during her everyday life.
April’s physically highly active, and has three to four training sessions at the gym every week, mostly because it’s important for her acting career to stay in shape.
April’s an avid dancer, and has been dancing since she was 11 years old.
April is passionate about travelling, and her acting career has taken her to a couple of US states, as well as to various European countries, while her dream travel destination is Vienna, Austria.
April has her own favorite actors and actresses, some of whom are Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder and Natalie Portman, while a couple of her favorite films include the franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Edward Scissorhands” and “Girl, Interrupted”.
