She’s an actress with close to 30 credits to her name, while she’s probably still known best for her portrayal of the supporting character Eva Benitez in the 2007 biographical crime movie “Freedom Writers”. It was written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, based on the book “The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them” co-ordinated by Erin Gruwell, and starred Hilary Swank, Imelda Staunton and Patrick Dempsey. The movie follows a young teacher who has inspired her at-risk students to become good people and pursue higher education, and it won two of three awards for which it was nominated.

Early life and education

April was raised in The Bronx by her Puerto Rican parents, about whom little is known because she respects their privacy; it’s said that her father was the owner of a small gas station, and that her mother was a cleaning lady. Because April hasn’t spoken of having any siblings, most of her fans believe her to be an only child.

April became interested in acting while still attending a local high school; she was a member of its drama club, and appeared in plays performed both at the school and a local theatre.
