Avi Kaplan’s Early Life

Kaplan was born and raised in Visalia, California, the son of the Jewish family of Shelly and Michael Kaplan; he has two older siblings, Joshua and Esther. During his stint at “The Sing-Off”, he shared that he was bullied a lot when he was a kid for being Jewish, especially because he has a very Jewish name.

Kaplan attended Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California, where he became part of the high-energy male a cappella group, Fermata Nowhere, who would later become the first community college a cappella group to win the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). It was during the competition that he also won the Best Rhythm Section.

During his time at San Antonio College, Kaplan also joined the jazz ensemble, Sincopation, and in his first year with the group, they won the Monterey Jazz Festival Competition.

Avi Kaplan’s Career

After his successful a cappella career in college, Kaplan continued his passion for music after graduation. He was an accomplished a cappella artist, who could also perform jazz and opera, as well as becoming very well-known in the a cappella community.

In 2011, Kaplan became part of another a cappella group called Pentatonix, originally comprised of Mitch Grassi, Kirstie Maldonado and Scott Hoying, who had been singing for a couple of years already, ever since they were in high school. They wanted to join the a cappella singing competition “The Sing-Off”, but knew that they needed a bass singer and a beat boxer to level up their game. A friend of the group introduced them to Kaplan, and they immediately wanted him to join the group because of his reputation in the a cappella community. They also added Kevin Olusola as their beat boxer who they found on YouTube beat boxing, and playing the cello.

Right after their first meeting, Kaplan with Pentatonix auditioned for the third season of “The Sing-Off”; the group’s unique take on pop songs and Kaplan’s prominent basso profondo led the team to win the third season of the show. Some of the songs they performed include “E.T.”, “Love Lockdown”, “Without You” and “Eye of the Tiger.” The success of the show and their win catapulted them to success, and also increased their net worth tremendously.

Pentatonix also became popular on YouTube, on which they upload various covers of popular songs. Kaplan’s time with Pentatonix tremendously helped his career as well as his wealth.
