She took up her bachelor’s degree there, and after completing her education, began working at the nearby KHQ-TV located in Spokane, Washington State. The station is an NBC affiliate and is the flagship of The KHQ Television Group which is a part of the company which owns “The Spokesman-Review” newspaper. Its broadcasts are shown in several areas of the US and Canada, noted for having a larger reach in Canada compared to its US coverage area.
Rise to Fame
After working for a few years with KHQ-TV, Cabrera returned to her hometown in Denver and began working with KMGH-TV Channel 7 News, which is an ABC affiliated and owned by the E. W. Scripps Company available through various cable and digital networks. She served there as a morning news anchor, and was a member of the field news team that covered the 2012 High Park fire, a wildfire located in the mountains west of Fort Collins in Larimer County, Colorado.
According to the reports, the fire was caused by a lightning strike and lasted for almost an entire month before it was contained. The fire caused a casualty and burned over 87,000 acres, the second largest fire recorded in Colorado by area burned. Around 260 homes were destroyed, making it the third most destructive fire in Colorado history. For her field reporting, she won an Emmy Award, and the morning team was awarded the Associated Press TV and Radio Association’s Annual Mark Twain Award for Best Morning Show Broadcast the following year.

Move to CNN
Shortly after being given her award, Ana was hired by CNN to work as a correspondent based in Denver. CNN is owned by Turner Broadcasting System and is the first television channel to provide 24-hour news coverage, and also the first all-news television channel in the US, broadcast to over 100 million US households. After some time as a correspondent, she was promoted to work with the CNN Investigative team, serving in that capacity for several years.
In 2017, she was named as the anchor of the weekend prime time program entitled “CNN Newsroom”, succeeding Poppy Harlow. “CNN Newsroom” is broadcast throughout the week featuring taped and live news reports. They also invite experts from various fields to discuss the issues and headlines they cover each broadcast. The show is known for focusing on softer news compared to other primetime programs which primarily do hard news reporting. The show is a standard for programming in their network, and began in 2006 by replacing “CNN Live Today” and many other shows in the same time slot throughout the week. The show is broadcast from the CNN headquarters located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Personal Life and Other Projects
For her personal life, it is known that Cabrera is married to Benjamin Nielsen and they have two children together, but very little other information is known about her husband and their marriage. While not working on her broadcasting endeavors, it is known that she is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, based in Washington, D.C. and helps with the advancement of Hispanic journalists in the US, with over 2000 members.
She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Mi Casa Resource Center, and has served on the board of the American Cancer Society, dedicated to eliminating cancer and has been active since 1913. They have various divisions throughout the world including over 900 offices in the US. She served with the main office located in Atlanta, Georgia. Similar to numerous broadcast journalists, she is highly active online through accounts on social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook.
