Who is DJ Qualls?

Donald Joseph ‘DJ’ Qualls was born in Nashville, Tennessee USA, on 10 June 1978 – his zodiac sign is Gemini, and he holds American nationality. He’s an actor and film producer, who has appeared in more than 50 movies and TV series, while he’s perhaps still known best for his portrayal of the supporting character Rat in the 2003 action science fiction adventure movie “The Core”. It was directed by Jon Amiel, starred Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank and Delroy Lindo, and depicts a catastrophe which is about to destroy Earth, unless people manage to drill down to its core so that the planet would start spinning again.

There are rumors circulating the internet claiming that DJ has quit acting, however, he’s still quite active in the film industry, and is currently shooting for the upcoming thriller movie “Turning Point”.

Early life and education

DJ was raised in Manchester, Tennessee alongside his four siblings, by their parents Donnie and Debbie, about whom little is known because DJ respects their privacy; it’s believed that his father was a used-car salesman, and that his mother was a housewife.

DJ attended a local elementary school in Tullahoma, Tennessee, but when 14 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma; the cancer went into remission after two years of treatment, however, according to DJ, the chemotherapy stopped his development.

DJ became interested in acting while attending Coffee County Central High School, becoming a member of their drama club, and appearing in various school plays; he was also into music, and was a member of the Red Raider Band.

DJ matriculated in 1996, and then enrolled at King’s College, London in England to study English literature, however, he eventually transferred to Belmont University in Nashville, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in acting in 2000.

DJ made his debut TV series appearance in the 1998 drama mini-series “Mama Flora’s Family”, while a couple of his following roles were in the 2002 episode “My Student” of the critically acclaimed comedy drama “Scrubs”, and in 2005 the episode “Extreme Aggressor” of the action crime drama “Criminal Minds” and the episode “Scared Crazy” of the mystery crime drama “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”.

DJ gained recognition in 2010 and 2011, when he starred as Davey Sutton in the crime comedy drama “Memphis Beat”, created by Liz W. Garcia and Joshua Harto, and which also starred Jason Lee and Sam Hennings. The series follows the life of the Memphis police detective Dwight Hendricks, and won one of the seven awards for which it was nominated.

DJ is also known for his portrayal of the lead character Billy Nugent in the 2014 comedy “Legit”, which also starred Jim Jefferies and Dan Bakkedahl, and follows Jim and his friends who are learning to be good people; the series won one of the two awards for which it was nominated. The following years saw DJ play and voice characters in an episode or two of various series, such as the animated comedy “American Dad!” (voice role), another animated comedy “Family Guy” (voice role) and the science fiction comedy “Time Traveling Bong”.

Between 2015 and 2018, DJ portrayed Ed McCarthy in the hit science fiction thriller drama “The Man in the High Castle”, created by Frank Spotnitz, and which starred Alexa Davalos, Luke Kleintank and Rufus Sewell. Set in a dystopian future, the series follows an America which is dominated by Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany, and it won 12 awards, including two Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 56 other awards.

DJ’s most recent TV series role has been in the 2022 drama “Bring on the Dancing Horses”.

Roles in movies

DJ made his debut film appearance in the 2000 comedy “Road Trip”, written and directed by Todd Phillips, and which starred Breckin Meyer, Seann William Scott and Amy Smart.

It follows four friends who have embarked on a road trip, trying to retrieve an illicit tape which was mailed to their female friend by mistake; the movie won four of the 13 awards for which it was nominated.

A couple of DJ’s following roles were in the 2000 mystery horror thriller “Cherry Falls”, the crime thriller comedy “Big Trouble” and the crime comedy “Lone Star State of Mind” both in 2002. In 2007, we saw him play the lead character Everett in the action adventure comedy “Delta Farce”, directed by C. B. Harding, and which also starred Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvall. The movie follows three Army soldiers who have been dropped by mistake into a Mexican village instead of into Iraq.

In 2011, DJ was cast to play Graham ‘One-Ball’ Jones in the comedy “Running Mates”, while he could then have been seen playing supporting characters in the 2012 crime comedy “Small Apartments”, the 2013 action crime comedy “Pawn Shop Chronicles”, and the 2015 romantic comedy “November Rule”. He portrayed one of the main characters The Last Free Man in the 2016 mystery crime drama “Buster’s Mal Heart”, written and directed by Sarah Adina Smith, and which also starred Rami Malek and Kate Lyn Sheil. The movie follows a family man who has met a drifter obsessed with conspiracy theories, and it was nominated for three awards.

Some of DJ’s most recent film roles have been in 2018 in the short crime drama “Fifty Minutes” and the  biographical sports drama “Bigger”, and the 2020 short comedy “Buzz Off”.
