Popularity through Marriage

Thomas James Burris’ achieved a type of fame – some would say eventually notoriety – through his marriage to Karen Carpenter. The two met at a dinner in Ma Maison restaurant in 1980, started dating. and the same year tied the knot at their wedding ceremony on the 31st August of 1980, in the Crystal Room of the Beverly Hills Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California.

Karen’s Death

Subsequently, it turned out that the marriage was a huge mistake for Karen, as they couldn’t have children – she didn’t know that her (future) husband Thomas wasn’t able to provide her with children as he had undergone a vasectomy, until finding out just days before the two married. She was very affected and shocked because she desparately wanted to become a mother. At the same time, he was apparently very cruel to her, calling her a “bag of bones”. So, it did not last long until she decided to file for divorce. All of these problems in their relationship led Karen to death, as she started suffering from anorexia, an eating disorder which caused a lot of complications in her body, including eventually heart failure. She did not manage to recover, and passed away on the 4th February of 1983, in Downey, California, at the time when they were finalizing the divorce.

Thomas James Burris Net Worth

To talk about his net worth, there is no information in the media about Thomas’ career, so we do not have any information about his wealth. We can assume that he shared the net worth of his wife during their brief marriage, due to the fact that his luxurious way of life caused a huge financial loss to Karen, as he spent almost the whole amount of her money to the point that she had only a few stocks left. However, before her death Karen changed her will to leave everything she owned to her family, so he didn’t inherit anything.

  1. This inaccurate. For one thing, she left him their family homes in her will. Significantly, their problems did not lead “Karen to death, as she started suffering from anorexia, an eating disorder.” She’d been suffering from aneroxia nervosa for years before she even met him.

    1. It was Richard who paid tom off. And she was getting ready to go to her attorney’s office to finalize the divorce

      1. That’s correct – Karen was intending to go with Olivia Newton-John to sign her final divorce papers on the day that she died, so it meant that she officially died a married woman.

I did read somewhere that Richard made Tom sign some sort of confidentiality agreement that forbids him from talking about his marriage to Karen.

    2. Karen only left the marital home and its contents to Tom in the finalized version of her will if she were to die.

    1. If I was her husband, as he was STILL until the time of her Death due to HER Anorexia Nervosa, SOLELY her doing,
I would sue the Hell out of P.Moss for Defamation of Character !

  2. My understanding was that she died while getting ready for court to finalize their divorce.
Also, I thought I read somewhere that the family had paid Burris off so he would stay out of the public eye (and therefore not make any money off of Karen). For years you couldn’t bring anything up on line about him, but I guess enough time has passed, both parents are gone.
One more thing…..when she started playing with Richard she played the drums…..at some point it was decided that, with her great voice, she should be up front. Someone had mentioned she should lose a little weight, so between that and her controlling mother maybe she never quite thought she was good enough. I still listen to her music, and after all this time still get teary eyed.

    1. Karen was a sweet soul she went though too much pain in her life I cherish her and always will. I love their music. Kathy

      1. You can say that again. Andy Gibb had also been in her life. I don’t know why she would turn to a money hungry doctor when a good physical therapist or chiropractor are much more competent. It wasn’t so much that she under ate it was that fact she continually washed out her digestive tract with laxatives that prevented assimilation. The body is not meant to bypass these functions and anything taken to do so is tantamount to abuse and overdosing.

    3. I personally believe that he just didn’t like the bad media attention he was receiving due to her death and that’s why he doesn’t make himself known. As for the “someone told her to lose weight” no, I disagree with that one. no one told her to lose weight, the media kept calling her ‘chubby’ and she started losing weight because of it and when people told her she looked good, she just kept going. it happens with anyone who is told that they look good if they lose weight, they will keep going thinking if they look good at one point maybe they would look even better if they keep going, but she took it to the extreme which caused her death from heart failure.
She is missed, but not forgotten.

    4. It was Richard Who paid off tom. and she was getting ready to go to her attorney’s office to finalize the divorce.

  3. Three people killed Karen Carpenter — her brother who indulged in drugs, her mother who loved and honored Richard more than Karen, and her husband who was full of deception, theft, and love of SELF… Rest In Peace, Karen, but know that everyone is not a fool… Richard would be nothing without Karen… Momma will Rest In Peace with no guilt… And Thomas — the Lowest of Low…

  4. Oh, her voice – any other will probably never match. We are blessed to have lived in the time when they performed. I do think we need to give credit to Richard for talents in composing. Richard did more than a fine job in that field.
I hope there was plenty of joy in their lives while they were on tour; and, am very pleased that it was for a few years. Richard may have thought they were just getting started – and that may have been true. However, they accomplished and enjoyed consecutive years of stardom. It is obvious they would still be going, it not strong – still going; if only life had led them down a different path. Karen may have gotten tired of performing, but I don’t think it ever showed once on your beautiful face. They were a pleasure to watch perform and certainly a pleasure for many hours of listening.

  5. I loved her music tremendously but, I can’t listen to them anymore bc most of her songs are so depressing & it makes me more 😔 depressed. She needed that mother love & approval..what she got was a mom who praised & practically worshipped her son & his every move! She wanted LOVE period… Bless your soul young lady. You were the BEST!

  6. There is a lady (in Asia) who has Karen’s identical voice, Richard has met with her and said it was good that her music is still living .
