David Chang was born on the 5th August 1977 in Vienna, Virginia USA, the son of Korean parents who immigrated to the USA in the 1960s, his father from the North while his mother is from South Korea. His parents were the owners of a golfing goods warehouse, and also owned a couple of restaurants, but young David never showed an interest in cooking, instead majoring in religious studies at Trinity College, Connecticut.

After graduation, he took on a number of odd jobs, including teaching English in Japan, and working at several restaurants as a busboy. It was in 2000 that he started attending the French Culinary Institute, which has been renamed to International Culinary Center. During his studies, David was employed at Mercer Kitchen in Manhattan, after which he moved to Tokyo, Japan, where he worked in Tokyo’s Park Hyatt Hotel. His next career move was a return to the US, where he got himself a job at Café Boulud in Manhattan, where he honed his skills for a while, before deciding to launch his own restaurant.
Rise to Prominence
David Chang opened the doors of his first restaurant in 2004, Momofuku Noodle Bar in the East Village, and two years later another – Momofuku Ssam Bar just a few blocks away from the first location, and in 2008 another Momofuku bar was launched, this time Momofuku Ko, which is a 12-seat restaurant. Since then, David has opened Momofuku bars across the US, Canada and Australia, in such cities as Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Sydney. In addition to Momofuku, he launched two more brands, Fuku and Milk Bar, which can be found in Canada and the US.
In addition to his career as a restaurateur, David is now also an avid celebrity chef, having appeared in a number of cooking shows on television. Some of the most successful in which he’s featured include “MasterChef Australia” (2010-2011), then “The Mind of a Chef” (2012), and of course, his most recent creation “Ugly Delicious” (2018), in which he is showcased traveling the world tasting food from a variety of cultures.
