Early life and education

Cristina was raised in Chihuahua by her mother Cristina Melendez and father Carlos Rascon, but because she respects her parent’s privacy, not many details have been disclosed about them; it’s widely believed that her mother’s a homemaker and her father an entrepreneur, but this remains unconfirmed. As Cristina’s yet to talk about having siblings, she’s believed to be an only child.

She began showing interest in both singing and acting at a quite an early age, and was eight when her parents enrolled her at school for the arts; Cristina was 14 when she joined the music group De La Garza, which performed various genres of music, such as pop, norteno and traditional Mexican. She then also performed with Taller de Arte and was the narrator of the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”.

Cristina took part in the nationwide singing contest Valores Bacardi y Compania while studying at a high school in Mexico City; she was one of the most promising contestants and won a scholarship to the music academy Conceptos. This led to her performing at various theatres around Mexico City, including her lead role in the musical “Evita” and supporting roles in “Hercules” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” (again).

Cristina matriculated in 1997 and then focused on her career rather than enrolling at college; she was offered a scholarship by the University of Texas at El Paso in 2000, and she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2004.

Music career

Cristina had her breakthrough aged 18 as she became known for her work with Conceptos; this led to Mexican music producer and manager Jose Antonio Gonzales choosing her to perform with the classical Mexican group Son de Mexico, which was at that point sponsored by the company Mexican Airlines. Cristina went on to tour around the USA and South America with the group, and they could’ve been heard performing at national festivals, political events and Mexican embassies; they were thus often featured in national TV broadcasts, in shows such as “El Espacio de Tatiana”, “Pacatelas” and “Al Fin de Semana”.

Son de Mexico released two albums prior to disbanding.

Cristina then began performing solo, initially serving as an opening act for Los Huracanes de Norte, Aida Cuevas and Kimbia Kings, amongst others; the following years saw her perform with the bands Alebrije, Los Big Sexy and The Heat, prior to winning “Objetivo Fama” on 18 May 2008.

Winning “Objetivo Fama” meant that Cristina was to sign a contract with Univision Music Group, which would make it possible for her to record her debut solo album; there was still some controversy surrounding her victory, not because of Cristina but because of the show’s questionable credibility. Two days after her win, Cristina held her first private concert.

She performed in the music competition show “Vive El Sueno” on 31 August 2009 and won second place even though she had previously been named best singer.

Cristina’s debut album “De los Pies Hasta la Frente” came out in 2009 and showcased her romantic side; the album comprised six tracks, and received mixed reviews. A year later, on 23 March 2010, Cristina released her debut EP “Jamas Te Dejare” in Puerto Rico, and her second studio album “Golpes de Pecho” followed in 2011.

She performed all around Latin America in the following a couple of years and in 2018, Cristina released her second EP “Las Mujeres No Se Dejan Ft. Lady Yuliana”.
