Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings
While Grace was born in Austin, her family including her younger brother moved to Boerne, before settling in San Antonio, both in Texas. She attended Robert E. Lee High School’s North East School of the Arts, where she majored in Musical Theatre, honing her talent for performing, and matriculated as a summa cum laude.
She eventually furthered her studies by enrolling at the Columbia University, apparently yet to graduate. Her professional career began in 2010 after she won the Las Casas Performing Arts Scholarship Competition. Her win led her to appear in a theatre production of the musical “Grease”, in which she was spotted by an agent and was signed soon after. She moved to Los Angeles and landed the role of Bee in the remake of “Fright Night”, a remake of the 1985 film of the same name, which follows a teenage boy who discovers that his neighbor is actually a vampire. It received generally positive reviews.
Shortly afterwards, Phipps was cast in the series “The Nine Lives of Chloe King”, originating in the role of Amy, but the show was short-lived, being cancelled after one season. This was merely a setback for her, as she was then cast in the supernatural series “The Vampire Diaries”, in the recurring role of April Young, appearing in 10 episodes during the fourth season.
In 2013, she appeared in the only Disney Channel film of that year, playing the biker girl Leta in the “Teen Beach Movie”, performing numerous solos and alongside Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell. The movie was set and filmed in Puerto Rico, and became the second highest rated cable movie in television history, During the same year, she also had a three episode role in the series “Baby Daddy”, playing the love interest of Ben played by Jean-Luc Bilodeau, and had guest roles in “Supernatural” and “The Signal”. The following year, she appeared in the Disney sitcom “Austin & Ally”, playing the diva movie star Brandy Braxton.
In 2015, Grace reprised her role in the “Teen Beach” sequel “Teen Beach 2” with most cast members returning to their roles, and which became the most watched cable movie of the year. She also starred in “Dark Summer” as Mona Wilson, a film about a teenager who believes that she is haunted by a girl he used to stalk online. She also did independent film work, appearing in the film “Some Kind of Hate” which aired at the Stanley Film Festival.
Her next project would be as Mandy in the television series “Scream Queens”, and then played a gang leader in a segment of “Tales of Halloween”. Her next projects would have her appearing in more popular television shows, such as “CSI: Cyber” and “Hawaii Five-0”, her popularity evidenced around the same time when she was featured on the cover of an issue of “Girls’ Life”. One of her latest projects is the series “Z Nation”, in which she plays Sgt. Lilly; the series has been running for five seasons, and is set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. The series was preceded by a television movie, before heading into a regular season format.
