Early Life and Education

Laura spent her childhood in Denville, New Jersey, where she was raised by her father, John San Giacomo, who was a paper mill owner, and her mother, MaryJo. She attended Morris Knolls High School in Denville, and while there became interested in acting, so she performed in various school productions. Upon matriculation, Laura enrolled in Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in Pittsburgh, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, specializing in acting. Right after graduation she moved to Now York City, to pursue her dream of becoming a professional actress.

Theater Career

Laura started by making appearances on stage, including in a production of “Wrong Turn At Lungfish” at the Garry Marshall-Lowell Ganz in Los Angeles, the production of “Three Sisters” at the Princeton/McCarter Theatre, and the off-Broadway production of “Beirut”. Moreover, she also performed in productions of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”, “The Tempest” and “Romeo And Juliet”. Thanks to her acting skills and performance in “As You Like It”, Laura received a special mention in the Walnut Street Theatre 1986 review.

On-Screen Acting Career and Her Breakthrough

Laura’s acting career soon moved to the next level, as she began her on-screen career by debuting as Luisa in an episode of the ABC daytime soap opera “All My Children” (1987), which was followed by other small roles in such TV series as “Crime Story” and “Miami Vice”, among others. In 1988, she landed the role of Sandy in the action drama “Miles From Home”, but it went uncredited, so her official debut film came in the following year, when she was cast as Cynthia Patrice Bishop in Steven Soderbergh’s independent drama film “Sex, Lies, And Videotape”, which actually represented her breakthrough, and earned her such awards as a Los Angeles Film Critics Association New Generation Award, Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female and Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as a nomination for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture category. The film itself won the prestigious Grand Prize, the Palem d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, so her popularity increased enormously, and added a considerable amount to her net worth.

Laura’s next significant roles came in 1990, when she portrayed Kit De Luca in the romantic comedy “Pretty Woman” next to Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, featured as Lauren Rose in the drama “Vital Signs”, and appeared in the lead role as Crazy Cora in the western drama film “Quigley Down Under”, alongside Tom Selleck.
