Age, Early Life, and Education Background

Katie Gavin was born in Chicago, Illinois, under the Capricorn zodiac sign on 30 December 1992, which makes her 30 years old as of 2023. She hasn’t disclosed the names of her parents. In a 17 February 2020 Instagram post, she wished her father, whom she referred to as ‘Papa Stevie G,’ a happy 60th birthday. She was brought up in a tight-knit Irish Catholic family alongside her sisters Maddie Gavin and Emily Gavin. Katie’s grandfather was a band leader and jazz trumpeter and she grew up looking to follow in his footsteps. By the time she was around 10 years old, Katie had begun writing songs and playing the guitar.

Gavin was educated at New Trier High School, Winnetka, Illinois, where she continued writing songs. Her dance teacher, Johannah Wininsky, remembers her for being ‘an engaging, open-minded, imitative, and a budding young artist, who brought ‘contagious’ positive energy in the class.’ She matriculated in 2011 and shortly afterward enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC), where she eventually graduated with a BA in music and a minor in American Studies and Ethnicity Studies. Gavin met with her bandmates, Josette Maskin and Josette Maskin during her days at USC.

Career – The Muna Band

The Muna band was created by Katie, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin in Los Angeles, California, in 2013. McPherson, who was the only member without a music major, partnered with Maskin on the guitar whereas Gavin provided vocals and synth bass. In 2014, the band released their first Extended Play (EP), “More Perfect,” which is available on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. Their success saw Sony Music Entertainment’s RCA Records label approach them for a contract deal. Shortly after signing with RCA Records, the band released their first major self-produced EP, “Loudspeaker” in mid-2016. On 3 February 2017, Muna released their debut album, “About U” and in September 2019, they released their second album. “Saves the World.”

However, Maskin’s attempts were futile and her bandmates ended up parting ways. McPherson previously disclosed ‘Me and Katie, we’re both Capricorns. We’re headstrong, we have this intense work ethic.
