Katie Gavin is an American-born pop singer, producer and activist, who is possibly best known for being a member of the pop band, Muna.
Age, Early Life, and Education Background
Katie Gavin was born in Chicago, Illinois, under the Capricorn zodiac sign on 30 December 1992, which makes her 30 years old as of 2023. She hasn’t disclosed the names of her parents. In a 17 February 2020 Instagram post, she wished her father, whom she referred to as ‘Papa Stevie G,’ a happy 60th birthday. She was brought up in a tight-knit Irish Catholic family alongside her sisters Maddie Gavin and Emily Gavin. Katie’s grandfather was a band leader and jazz trumpeter and she grew up looking to follow in his footsteps. By the time she was around 10 years old, Katie had begun writing songs and playing the guitar.
Gavin was educated at New Trier High School, Winnetka, Illinois, where she continued writing songs. Her dance teacher, Johannah Wininsky, remembers her for being ‘an engaging, open-minded, imitative, and a budding young artist, who brought ‘contagious’ positive energy in the class.’ She matriculated in 2011 and shortly afterward enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC), where she eventually graduated with a BA in music and a minor in American Studies and Ethnicity Studies. Gavin met with her bandmates, Josette Maskin and Josette Maskin during her days at USC.
Career – The Muna Band
The Muna band was created by Katie, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin in Los Angeles, California, in 2013. McPherson, who was the only member without a music major, partnered with Maskin on the guitar whereas Gavin provided vocals and synth bass. In 2014, the band released their first Extended Play (EP), “More Perfect,” which is available on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. Their success saw Sony Music Entertainment’s RCA Records label approach them for a contract deal. Shortly after signing with RCA Records, the band released their first major self-produced EP, “Loudspeaker” in mid-2016. On 3 February 2017, Muna released their debut album, “About U” and in September 2019, they released their second album. “Saves the World.”

Shortly after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Muna band was dropped by RCA Records because they were ‘not making enough money.’ In mid-2021, the band announced that they had signed with the American singer-songwriter, Phoebe L. Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records. They went on to release the singles “Silk Chiffon” and later another single entitled “Anything But Me” in March 2022. On 24 June 2022, Muna released their third album “Muna,” under Dead Oceans and Saddest Factory Records. The band has performed in various shows including Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show.
In 2021, Katie and the other members of the Muna band started hosting the podcast “Gayotic,” which airs on the podcasting network, Headgum. The podcast’s official description reads Having been described by the press as ‘occasionally hard-to-follow,’ ‘’going through it’ and ‘as chaotic as they are iconic…the band MUNA started this podcast with the hope of providing not only more income but also a rare insight into the behavior of queers.’ The Muna band members often host gay special guests. Some of the celebrities that have appeared on their podcast include Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.
Social Media Presence
Gavin is active on Instagram (@katiegavs) with over 102,000 followers. She launched her self-titled YouTube channel on 2 June 2022; she hasn’t posted any video on the channel, but has shared her Twitter, SoundCloud, and Bandcamp (online music community and record store) links on the channel, which has over 3,300 subscribers.
Gavin, and her Muna bandmates, Maskin and McPherson are openly gay. Gavin began dating Naomi McPherson, in 2014. Their relationship began crumbling shortly after their band signed a contract with RCA Records, and Maskin tried to intervene by urging the duo to go for therapy for the sake of their band’s survival and to save their friendship. However, Maskin’s attempts were futile and her bandmates ended up parting ways. McPherson previously disclosed ‘Me and Katie, we’re both Capricorns. We’re headstrong, we have this intense work ethic. But whatever we didn’t see eye to eye on was just not as important as the music or our friendship.’ Their relationship lasted for three years.
