The Shooting of Ross and His Fight to Survive

Ross Capicchioni gained recognition around the globe for being a survivor of a shocking and violent incident that occurred on 6 June 2007. At the time, he was a 17-year-old teenager, who lived an ordinary life, attending high school, enjoying skateboarding, and spending time hanging out with his friends. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he accepted an invitation from someone he considered a friend to accompany him to his cousin’s house located in a dangerous area in the infamous east side of Detroit. Once they arrived there and got out of the car, his supposed friend shot him three times – first in the left arm, second in the chest, and third time in the head. Following this brutal attack, Ross’ attacker took his car keys and drove away, leaving him behind to fight for his life.

Fortunately, a probation officer spotted Ross and called for an ambulance. Despite being pronounced dead upon his arrival at the hospital, one doctor decided to undertake life-saving measures and do his best to try to help him. After heart surgery, the medical team gave him 24 hours to see if he would remain alive. Following this, they also performed additional surgeries on his arm and head, and Ross woke up three days later. He experienced significant memory loss since he couldn’t recall his own name or any other details, except for his father’s phone number. He was sent home only five days after surgeries and then continued to work on his physical and mental recovery over the next years. He pointed out that skateboarding helped him to overcome all the challenges he faced in his recovery journey while undergoing physical therapy.

Regarding his attacker, he allegedly had to kill a random person in order to gain acceptance into a gang as part of the initiation process, so he chose Ross. Following the attack, the perpetrator called one of their mutual friends, confessing to him that he had shot Ross and claiming that Ross was dead. Their mutual friend reported that information to the police and shortly afterwards the attacker was arrested and brought to trial. Ross eventually identified the attacker and during the trial, he shared the whole story with the jury. As a result, the perpetrator was sentenced to spend 35 years in jail.

Ross considers himself a very blessed person who managed to survive the attack miraculously despite serious injuries, and he is one of the few individuals who transformed their life-threatening situations into valuable learning experiences for the masses. His rise to prominence came when he decided to share his story publicly through a two-part mini-documentary, entitled “Aberrican Me: Ross Capicchioni”, which was produced by Eric Koston and Steve Berra. The documentary was released on the YouTube Old Berrics Channel on 7 October 2011. Both episodes, “ABERRICAN ME – Ross Capicchioni – Part 1” and “ABERRICAN ME – Ross Capicchioni – Part 2”, have accumulated nearly five million views in total.

Furthermore, Joyner Lucas was inspired by his story and released a song about it in 2015, entitled “Ross Capicchioni”.
