Sophia Maria Lucia was born on 7 September 2002, in San Diego, California. From a young age, it became apparent that Sophia possessed a natural talent for movement and expression. Her early life was shaped by a passion for dance, and she embarked on her training journey at a very young age.
Her parents took notice of her talent, and enrolled her in the San Diego Dance Centre, whose owner is her cousin Kristen Hubbs. Career
Sophia’s rise to popularity began in January 2012, when a video of her doing 40 consecutive pirouettes was published; she was only nine years old at the time. The video garnered much attention, as the standing world record for consecutive pirouettes was 36. Today, that video has over one million views, and got her featured in “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, and during her performance on the “hidden talent” segment of the show, Sophia performed a tap dance, followed by 30 pirouettes before she came to a stop at the edge of the dance floor they had prepared for her.
Her mother, Jaclyn, claimed that she could have done 10 more, and would get her chance to prove it in a few months – she was expected to return on air alongside a representative of the “Guinness Book of World Records”, thus giving her the opportunity to break the world record on national television.
However, this opportunity never materialized, and it was only the following year that she was able to successfully break the world record for pirouettes. At the age of 10, Sophia performed 55 consecutive pirouettes, smashing Alicia Clifton’s pervious record, and earning her spot in the Guiness Book of World Records.
In 2013, Sophia appeared in the audition for “America’s Got Talent”, displaying her ballet moves and signature pirouettes. More notable, she took part in the world-renowned American dance program “Dancing with the Stars.”
That same year, she also joined the popular American reality tv series “Dance Moms,” taking part in the show’s third season as part of team “The Replacements,” but only ended up staying for a few episodes, as her team was shortly disbanded.
Apart from her Guinness World Record, Sophia holds several awards for her dancing skills. Most notably, in 2014, she was awarded Junior Female Best Dancer at The Dance Awards in Las Vegas. She also competed in the 2016 Youth America Grand Prix winning the junior award for Competitive Dance. She came in a close second in the Pas de deux segment, a dance duet in which she performed with William Jackson Beckham. In the women’s junior Classical Dance, she found least success, coming into the top 12.
In addition to her dancing career, Sophia also ventured into the world of acting. Her first appearance on the big screen was in an episode of the Disney TV series “Shake It Up” in 2012. Following this debut, she acted in the “Kirby Buckets” as well as the hit Nickelodeon show “Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn” in 2015. Her most notable acting role was probably that of Sadie in the family drama movie “A Nutcracker Christmas” in 2016.
